Address space

Unrouted space and allocation age, release 2026-11.

A /24 can have a country without being announced on the Internet, and IPv4 was handed out over four decades. This page shows both for the 14.4M /24s with a country: how much is not routed, and when the registries allocated it. It explains why "has a country" and "routed" are different numbers elsewhere on the site. The packages carry the allocation date per /24 (RIRAllocationDate).

Reading the two measures together

ARIN space is the oldest (median allocation year 1998) and AFRINIC space the youngest (2014). ARIN has the largest unrouted share, 13.6%. Unrouted does not mean unused: networks keep internal or reserved space off the public routing table.

How to read these figures

  • Scope: every /24 with a country (the RIR/IANA unallocated reserve is left out).
  • Unrouted = the /24 has a country but no origin AS in this release's BGP view: held, internal or idle space, or space announced only as part of a route not seen here.
  • Allocation decade = the date of the RIR delegation record that contains the /24 (RIRAllocationDate). '1980s' includes the few earlier records. A block can be used by someone other than its first holder.
  • Median year = half of the country's /24s sit in allocations made in or before that year.
